HEALTH

Due to their physiology, female athletes are prone to a number of health disorders which don't afflict their male peers. The three major ones are known as the female athlete triad and they revolve around lower energy levels, menstrual problems and weakness in the bones.

Energy level problems arise from the massive expenditure of energy that female athletes make without replenishing it through adequate diet. The core problem is that there's not enough energy left for the body's basic functions and processes.

For some female athletes, this problem often arises though eating disorders. They try to perfect performance by reducing body fat through reduced food intake. Other unpleasant results include dehydration and malnourishment, together with psychological conditions such as obsessive eating, depression, and anxiety.

One of the female body processes affected by a lack of available energy is menstruation. At its extreme this can result in loss of Menstrual Periods (Amenorrhea). Exercise itself doesn't affect menstruation and increasing dietary intake can resolve the problem. In very young athletes, low energy availability may also delay the onset of menstruation.

Finally, inadequate energy supplies also affect the replenishment of bone tissue. At its worst, this can lead to osteoporosis. Each day the body reabsorbs old bone tissue and forms new bone tissue. Anything affecting this process results in reduced bone mass. The effect of low energy on the body's hormone system also plays a role here.

Ultimately, the female athlete has to define her own limits of training and ensure an adequate diet to handle the threat of the female athlete triad.
